Name: Gralat Berlurik
Canon: Shoukoku no Altair
Canon Point: Chapter 109
Age: 27
History: here
Personality: Gralat, much like the place where he was born and bred, is sharp edges and deadly cold. He is like cut out of the icy mountains, presenting a cool exterior, with the deadliness of the sharpened edge of a blade.
Generally, Gralat wears a neutral, disinterested look on his face, often mixed with a resting irritated look in his eyes. The expression can make him seem irritable and aloof at the same time, and it has a tendency to make people wary of him. It’s difficult to know what goes on in his mind since he doesn’t let his emotions show and it’s difficult to guess his intentions. He has a reputation of being ruthless that puts those who know about it on edge, as if they expect him to cut them down without warning.
Not that their concern isn’t valid. Gralat does not find it difficult to kill. Death is a part of life in Ellvaldez, and violence is like an old friend. Anybody can die from the cold or from starvation, the climate doesn’t discriminate between social classes, and Gralat is intimately familiar with this. It is because he is so familiar with the death that people in his home face that he fights in the first place. He became a soldier because he wanted to give the people of Ellvaldez a better shot at the future. He will fight anyone, kill anyone, if it will help the people of Ellvaldez survive another year without having to worry about the cold or about starvation.
Gralat is a man of the battlefield and he prefers to stay active and fighting, if he has a cause. He can get restless if he has to sit around and do nothing; it’s something that he doesn’t particularly enjoy doing, as he finds it unproductive. He doesn’t like to lay around after being wounded, he will still be up and about while taking some care not to exacerbate any injuries further, unless he has reason to keep fighting. He won’t allow himself the break to let his muscles and skills fade, he needs to stay active and make sure he stays fit and ready to fight.
As a result of his harsh upbringing, he is indeed a very ruthless man. But he doesn’t needlessly seek out violence without reason. Just because he finds no issue in killing doesn’t mean that he will go out of his way to do so. He’s a cold-blooded soldier, not a cold-blooded murderer. Sure, he enjoys participating in tournaments and he tends to win them even when going up against the most skilled soldiers and knight in the Empire, and he enjoys going up against them because it means he can beat up stuck-up knights and nobles who think they’re better than others because they have money and power, but he won’t kill, maim, or commit horrendous crimes if it is of no benefit to Ellvaldez. Generally, at least.
Because while Gralat may present as a calm and composed man, he is actually a bit of a hot-head. He has no patience for fools and idiots, he has no patience for those stuck-up nobles who think they’re better than everyone else simply because of their birth and as a result belittle people and treat them badly, simply for their difference in birth. He has no patience for people who are wasteful, be it of cloth, food, water, or other resources that Ellvaldez is in desperate need of. All born to Ellvaldez know to pitch in, to work for their home even off the battlefield. What little they have, they need to work to preserve, they need to work to last. Waste precious time or resource, and he will not be sparse on the insults.
He is a clever man, able to assess situations quickly and critically. He is good at thinking on his feet and to keep his cool in pressed situations. He is attentive to details though might not always share his observations or care about the emotions that he reads in people, even with direct superiors and close friends. He’s private about his feelings. But at the same time he has no hesitation to share his opinions. If something is stupid, he won’t hesitate to say so, even if he is disrespectful. Gralat does not discriminate, because he has learned that nobody is discriminated against by the mountains. This lesson that he has learned from his birthplace is both a good and a bad thing. On the one hand, he won’t treat people differently if he can help it, that is, if it’s not important to, for example, stay respectful for the sake of Ellvaldez, he won’t treat beggars differently from how he would treat peasants or nobles and won’t look down on them for their situation. On the other hand he also won’t spare anyone when it comes to killing, no matter who it is, even if it’s children.
Despite being a cool and collected man though, that is not always the case. He is more passionate than his face lets people know. He loves Ellvaldez with a burning passion, despite knowing that it’s a terrible place that doesn’t love him in return. He will work hard for the sake of the people that are left behind at home and he won’t shy away from protecting his own. He will lay down his life without hesitation if it means that the people at home will have a chance for a better future and the opportunity to survive one more winter.
He is not only Duchess Leledericks right hand man, but her best friend. They often get into spats over the most irrelevant things. They can appear down-right childish in their arguments, and they can be vey petty. With people that he is comfortable around, such as Lelederick and the Ellvaldez troops, he has no problem with showing his irritably childish side. But he’s known her and them for a very long time, and it takes time or reason for him to warm up to someone enough for them to experience the casual bickering that he can get involved in. Lelederck and Gralat can purposefully pick on each other and annoy each other, as friends do. The other members of the Ellvaldez mountain troops are used to and amused by their arguments and the troops laughing at Gralat and Leledericks arguments does not bother him the slightest. So, although he is not only sharp, deadly edges, you need to know him for him to show his other sides. He’s not necessarily soft, that’s a difficult emotion for him, but he’s not incapable of softer-like feelings. It’s just not something that he particularly cares for. Plus, other peoples feelings are secondary to Ellvaldez, as are his own. Nonetheless, he has something of a temper that he sometimes can’t suppress, though he prefers to not be too open with his feelings around people that he doesn’t know and trust.
Although hardly a friendly man, Gralat is capable of being cordial enough off the battlefield for him to be trusted as representative of Lelederick when she is unable to act on her on-and-off role as ambassador. He is eloquent when he wants to be, capable of the most flowery language. He knows how to conduct himself around nobility and royalty. As a result of growing up in a poor region that is hard to survive in, he knows how to value the effort put behind the production of anything necessary to survive, be it clothing, food, or weapon and tools for those purposes. He knows how to show the respect that people deserve, and he knows how to fake respect as well. He will show false respect to the aristocracy, and he will show true respect to craftsmen, farmers, and the like, because they are actually doing something worth respecting, unlike most of the aristocracy. Although it might come off as the opposite, because at the same time as Gralat is polite in speech, he is harsh and cynical. He doesn’t have time to waste on frivolities, and he doesn’t spoil himself. He would rather not allow himself luxuries if his brethren of Ellvaldez can't experience them as well.
Gralat does not fear death. It's not like he has a death wish though; he does not want to piss Minister Louis off too much for example, because he will not needlessly put his life on the line. Though, he would rather not lose his head too easily, so with some people, such as Minister Louis or the Emperor, he will mind his words to an extent. Gralat is a person who knows to prioritize what is important for survival, no matter what he have to do.
Gralat is not a particularly compassionate man. He thinks that people who can’t take care of themselves in a fight shouldn’t fight, and have no sympathy for them if they pick fights they are not ready to sacrifice their life during, or if they’re not ready to kill. You only fight if you’re ready to be completely serious, otherwise, don’t stick your nose where it doesn’t belong. But even as he is not particularly compassionate, he is not unnecessarily cruel. For enemies, the most compassion that he can show is a quick death. He doesn’t relish in the atrocities he commits, he only does them because they are necessary. If that makes him evil then so be it; he’ll do whatever he has to do for the continued survival of his home. Even if that means that he himself will never be able to return.
Because Gralats loyalty is uncompromising, and he will never betray his home. Ellvaldez is in his blood and he lives and dies for Ellvaldez. Collateral is not an issue for him - even if he’s part of that collateral. Everyone in Ellvaldez are the same. They will never be truly loyal to anyone else; Ellvaldez fights for the Balt-Rhein Empire, but they only do so for the sake of survival. Ellvaldez is a poor nation-turned-duchy, and can’t function without outside help, not with their cold climate and barren soil. In name, Gralat might fight for the Empire, but there is no loyalty for it or its emperor in his heart. This will be the same no matter who Ellvaldez would be vassal to. Because if it was beneficial to Ellvaldez, he would not hesitate to betray the Empire.
As a man of the Ellvaldez mountains, Gralat is very hardy and tough. He is very difficult to get rid of, be it in pursuit or to kill him. The Ellvaldez Mountain Troops are highly skilled soldiers, stubborn and persistent, and Gralat is the worst of the bunch. That is, he is the strongest of them, and the most stubborn and persistent of them all. He is a hard worker, and he is a survivor, capable of managing in the harshest of climates. Except perhaps in heat. Being a man from the coldest region of Rumeliana, he is not used to the warmer climates, even after fighting in them. Still, he is a stubborn man, and he will keep going until he is bled dry, as long as it’s for the sake of the country that he will remain loyal to for as long as he lives.
Abilities: Incredible physical strength. Incredible skill with blades. He is very intelligent. A capable rider. Knows field treatment of wounds and how to stitch them up. Knows how to farm and care for animals. Knows politics and manners fit for court.
Strengths: Cool-headed, patient, courteous, loyal, not needlessly violent.
Weaknesses: Distant, impatient, childish, temperamental, ruthless.
God/Shinki: God
Why?: Because he would be zero degrees loyal to the Heavens. Being loyal to the Heavens or doing these god duties does nothing for Ellvaldez, does it? It won't bring him home faster, it won't bring him back slower either. Then he won't give a damn, Heaven can go fall apart as much as it wants.
Top 3 Choices: Pekko, Philomelus, Sampsa Pellervoinen.
God Type: As mentioned on the why. He won't give a damn. He will be bad at this. He may participate in fights or farming, but make no mistake; it is purely to stave off boredom. I decided to make him a god of agriculture because of the region he comes from, where the winter lasts for over half the year and every bit of sunlight counts if they want to survive; the time available to deal with agriculture in Ellvaldez is very precious to every person living there.
Power: Silver Constructs: Can expand silver from a source. There is no limit to the amount he needs but there has to be a source of some sort, even if it's just a few grains of silver. There can't be something out of nothing. The sky is the limit- so he can't create something he can't imagine, or things that he doesn't have a basic understanding of how they work. For example, he can create animals such as birds or horses, but he can't create modern technology like phones or cars. Blades are not a problem, but firearms are. His creations are only as solid as his mental strength at the time, so if his will sways so does the constructs. They don't disappear if he were to fall asleep but if he were to be forecefully knocked out they would be. He does not need to be near his constructs, they would still be solid and function as intended if he were away from them and simply spared a corner of his power to keep it active. So long as his power is activated then the constructs are solid.
